Montessori quite book design

Still a work in progress...

Brother is out of the box

Big thanks to my sister for a wonderful birthday present.  I finally took it out of the box to make a few baggies for baby's toys.  Also started on the quite book for car rides... iPad is going on vacation.

Going off on a tangent...

Today in New York Times

a) Carl June keeps kicking my ex-boss' a**

b)Let’s Gang Up on Killer Bugs
Carl F. Nathan (chairman of the department of microbiology and immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College)
Bacteria are quickly growing resistant to the antibiotics we have — but our model for making new drugs is broken. It’s time for a fresh approach.
c) Preventing Lethal Hospital Outbreaks of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria
Thomas J. Sandora, M.D., M.P.H., and Donald A. Goldmann, M.D.
N Engl J Med 2012; 367:2168-2170December 6, 2012DOI: 10.1056/NEJMp1212370
and I quote:
In 2011, a strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae resistant to multiple antibiotics, including carbapenems, was identified in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).1 This organism has since colonized at least 19 patients and may have caused seven deaths among patients with severe coexisting conditions. Although the spread of the organism was traced through clinical epidemiologic investigation and whole-genome sequencing, it was curtailed by “rigorous infection-control procedures.” What does this episode tell us about how to mitigate the risk of future outbreaks?
d)And you think 'they/we' would have learned by now?

FMI - Ideas on College Education

Because it is never to early to think about your child's college education or saving for one.
Some current opinions on that matter from NY Times...

Even for the most “risk-embracing mavericks,” foregoing college based on optimistic anecdotes of success is not a sensible option.

Saying No to College

The idea that a college diploma is an all-but-mandatory ticket to a successful career is showing fissures. Risky? Perhaps. But it worked for the founders of Twitter, Tumblr and a little company known as Apple.

Colleges are building global student bodies and trying to create models for massive open online courses, or MOOCs.

Lesson I must share - respect your child.

Short excerpt from Maria Montessori's Spontaneous Activity In Education.
I love her ideas and her work and as much as possible I apply them in the home.
